What Is Level 2 Market Data, and Why Do Professional Traders Watch It?

The last price is only the surface. Level 2 data, or market depth, shows who is waiting behind each price and where the liquidity sits.

Market data

On an ordinary chart you only see the outcome: the price where trades happened. Behind every candle, though, hundreds of buy and sell orders are waiting that haven't filled yet. Level 2 data is a window onto those waiting orders, what traders also call market depth or the order book.

Level 1 versus Level 2

Level 1 is the simplest view of price: the last trade, the best bid and the best ask. It's what most apps show you.

Level 2 goes a step further and shows every price level with the size waiting at it. You might see 12 bitcoin bid at $80,000, 4 at $79,990, and suddenly 60 at $79,950. That last number is what traders call a "bid wall".

Why market depth matters

  • It shows liquidity: you can tell how far price would move if you bought or sold a large size (slippage).
  • Real support and resistance: a line you draw on a chart is a guess; a cluster of orders in the book exists right now.
  • The balance of buyers and sellers: when the bid side is much heavier than the ask side, buying pressure is stronger in the moment.
  • Footprints of big players: large orders that appear and vanish are often whales or algorithms at work.

Tick data: every trade, as it happens

Alongside depth, tick data matters too: every single trade with its price, size and whether a buyer or a seller started it. A one-minute candle squeezes dozens or hundreds of trades into one bar and hides a lot. Tick data shows whether a move was built by a few big trades or by many small ones.

Know the limits

Market depth is powerful but it isn't magic. Orders can be placed and pulled in an instant, and part of the real liquidity never shows in the book at all. In crypto, each exchange also has its own order book. Read Level 2 alongside other evidence, not on its own.

The bottom line

If a price chart is a photo of the market, Level 2 is a look at the queue of people waiting at the door. Whoever only sees the photo is always a step behind. Learning to read depth takes time, but it gives you a view no indicator on a chart can.
